Sir Ian McKellen
Join one or both full day guided tours (Chetwood Forest and West of Rivendell) taking you to filming locations in the Nelson area, an absolute must for the serious fan! Private tour or standard tour both with pick-up from the lodge.
In the morning drive over to Golden Bay and stop at some of the sights. The horse treks are either on the beach, on the clifftops or through farmland and take 1-2 hours, allowing time for a stroll on Wharariki Beach or one of the other short walks afterwards.
Many of the locations are only accessible by helicopter. Extend either of the Hobbit Location Tours with a flight to Mt Owen (exit from the mines of Moria), Mt Olympus (south of Rivendell) or both.
Small tours to the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Locations will pick up from the Lodge. Visiting sites on Takaka Hill before stopping at the locations in Golden Bay.
Just 15 minutes from the Lodge, the Ngaru Caves were the location for the Hobbit cave scenes, also interesting for moa bones and other limestone cave features.
A short drive from the Lodge (including 11km on unsealed road), Harwoods Hole hike is through deep native bush and ends with a view down the deepest hole in the Southern Hemisphere. See black robins and other birds along this 45 minute hike. Recognise scenery from the Hobbit and LOTR films.
